Updated ASHRAE guidance on Infectious Aerosols

ASHRAE has released its updated position on infectious aerosols. Most of its recommendations apply to improving overall system design. However, there are several actionable items for building owners and operators that can help reduce spread of viruses through the HVAC system.

Note that some of these may carry an energy penalty, so are not necessarily best practice during “normal” times. The recommendations for non-healthcare buildings include:

1. Increase outdoor air ventilation by opening outside air dampers to 100% or disabling demand control ventilation (if indoor and outdoor conditions allow).
2. Increase HVAC filters to MERV-13 or better.
3. Run systems 24-7 if possible.
4. Consider utilizing ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) devices in high-density areas like waiting rooms.
